DIY air purifiers using a fan and Merv filter
HOW TO MAKE a do-it-yourself air-purifier by attaching a (replacement) HEPA filter intended for a furnace or a regular air purifier onto the front of a flat-faced box fan (or presumably other fan), for bedrooms or other places:
https://smartairfilters.com/.....geeky stuff about why putting filter on the front is better than on the back, which filterscapture/etc what, etc:

6-pack of (Merv 13) HEPA furnace filters at amazon (could buy singly at Home Depot, etc?):

Could combine with a "pre-filter" to screen large dust particles, pet hair, etc, before air reaches HEPA filter.
"Merv" is the designation used (for furnace/HVAC filters...one brand?) to indicate the rate the filter captures the lowest-micron sizes. "Merv 13" is the highest rating, according to one person. They're also HEPA filters but go by another name for furnaces.

....Home Depot sells 1-inch thick, 20- by 20-inch MERV-13 filters for about $10 each; Best Buy sells a 20-by-20 box fan for $26.99. . . He actually used a 4"-thick filter (more expensive, but more filtration and don't have to be changed as often).
.... Also more info about making them quieter, etc.

(most setups also good for those with pollen allergies, for pet dander, etc.)

"Pre-filters don’t improve performance. What they do is capture large particles which your HEPA filter would capture anyway. The benefit is that they spare your HEPA filter, allowing it to last longer."
(There are different kinds of pre-filters that could be used, not only the ones like the fine-screen pre-filters for our Winix air purifiers--or the fine window screen from hardware store which could perhaps be stretched in a "frame" or not that could substitute. Vacuum or even wash pre-filters when needed.)

This person just uses a very-inexpensive "dust / allergy" filter, or a heavier-allergy/etc version of it (intended for a furnace?), rather than a HEPA filter.
And also puts the filter on the back rather than the front. Still captures lots of stuff.
